KANECARON® FAQs
How does it prevent fire from developing and spreading?
When Kanecaron is forced to burn, it quickly releases a small amount of non-combustible gas through microscopic pores. This gas is heavier than oxygen and extinguishes the flames in a manner similar to a fire extinguisher.
If only part of the fabric is flame-retardant, don’t I have to FR treat the rest?
No. Kanecaron imparts flame-retardance to the fabric as a whole. That means the conventional fibre(s) don’t need to be flame-retardant and don’t need FR-treatment.
How do I use Kanecaron?
In furnishing fabrics (upholstery and drapery), it is used as a ‘weft-only solution’. In other woven product types, such as protective apparel fabrics and contract bed products, it tends to be used in an intimate blend in the both the warp and the weft. It can be used in knitted and non woven products, too. Being one of the few fibres able to withstand acid and alkali, further applications for Kanecaron are also being developed for the automotive and electrical industries.
Does Kanecaron meet all the FR standards?
Yes, Kanecaron fabrics can meet all the important FR standards in use around the world, including Europe, Japan and Asia, for furnishings, transport, protective apparel and bed-products, including European and British Standards, the French M1, Italian Classe 1 and German B1.
Is Kanecaron expensive?
Because it’s a flame-retardant fibre, it costs more than, say, acrylic or polyester. But because Kanecaron fabrics typically only contain between 25% and 60% of Kanecaron (depending on the fabric type and FR requirement), it is a cost-effective solution and an attractive alternative to FR-treated fabrics.
Is Kanecaron easy to dye?
Yes, it dyes very similarly to regular acrylic using basic dyes, without the need for very high-temperatures or expensive dyestuffs. As with acrylic, the full spectrum of shades and good fastness properties can be obtained. Kanecaron is dyed in loose-stock, top, package, hank and piece-form. Unlike certain other inherently flame-retardant fabrics, Kanecaron fabrics continue to meet the required FR standards even when treated with performance enhancing resin finishes, such as stain-resist and shrink-resist.
Is Kanecaron available on different spinning systems?
Yes: OE, woollen, ring, and, of course, in fancy format, too: chenille, slub, bouclé.
Can I print on Kanecaron fabrics?
Yes – and, again, there’s usually no negative effect on the FR performance. Pigment printing, vat and transfer, and other systems as well.
Are Kanecaron fabrics dry-cleanable and washable?
Yes. All Kanecaron fabrics are dry-cleanable and washable at 40°C. With suitable fabric design and correct finishing techniques, Kanecaron fabrics can be washed at 70°C, 80°C or even 100°C with minimal shrinkage and colour loss.
